Thoughts about our heart logo:
|
The logo with the Hebrew letter “shin” (ש) (pronounced sheen) inside the heart combines several concepts:
In Deuteronomy 6:4-9 we are instructed in the Shema:
“Hear, O Israel: YHVH our Elohim, YHVH is one! You shall love YHVH your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words, which I command you today, shall be in your heart.”
In Biblical Hebrew the word “heart” does not relate to the seat of emotion as conceived in western thought, but refers to the mind where our thoughts are processed.
According to the sages, the letter shin stands high among the Hebrew letters because it represents two Names of God:
- Shaddai (שדי) —the All-Sufficient, Unlimited One.
- Shalom (שלום) —Peace.
The Midrash interprets the three branches of shin as alluding to:
- The three worlds in which man lives—this world, the Messianic era, and the world to come.
- The life-giving ruach (spirit— רוח) , neshama (soul —נשמה), and guf (body— גוף) , upon which man's survival depends.
- The three sanctities found in the world—the Holy One (YHVH), the holiness of Shabbat, and the holiness of Yisrael.
The shin seems to reach heavenward, like a bed of flowers growing upward, longing to receive sustenance from above. So too our prayers are lifted up to YHVH.
The letter shin is related to shein (שן) which means tooth. Note that the shin resembles a molar tooth, which crushes food with its three sharply edged cusps. Also, it is related to shanan (שנן) which means sharpened (figuratively to teach). As the tooth grinds the food to make it digestible for the body, so shall teaching transmit the Torah in such a well-analyzed manner that it can be absorbed by the mind.

“Behold, the days are coming, says YHWH,
when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah
. . . I will put My law in their minds,
and write it on their hearts;
and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”
Jeremiah 31:31,33b
